Rolls of Honour

The Bollington Parish Roll of Honour

The Bollington Parish Roll of Honour is dated 1 May 1917. It contains a list of names of soldiers who had enlisted and a much shorter list of men known to have died. The main list is grouped into names beginning with the same initial, but the names are not listed alphabetically within each group. Presumably the names were provided by family members. Some names seem to have been repeated erroneously, although there were a number of cases of several Bollington soldiers having the same name. Many men would have enlisted after the Roll of Honour was published. The list of the men who had died includes some who died within the last two weeks of April 1917, but on the other hand there are a number of casualties whose death had presumably not been reported when the Roll was prepared.

Clarence & Adelphi Mills Roll of Honour

Mill roll of honour

The Clarence and Adelphi Mills were both owned by George Swindells & Sons. A combined Roll of Honour for WW1 was framed and mounted, along with a much smaller combined Roll of Honour for WW2. The WW1 Roll listed rank, initials, surname and regiment for each man, and symbols alongside some of the names indicated if he was wounded or dead. The regiments are not always correctly identified (it was often the case that a soldier was not mobilised with the regiment or battalion with which he had initially enlisted).

These Rolls were probably originally located in the Clarence Mill (as the Clarence names are listed first). Later they were mounted by the stairs up to the gallery by the West door of St John's Church (this probably happened when the cotton mill ceased operating). When St John's was closed, the Rolls of Honour were removed from the former church for conservation.

They have recently been installed in the Adelphi Mill (ground floor, in the waiting area adjacent to the lift), and are on public view during office hours (Monday to Friday).

(The photograph shows the Rolls of Honour when they were still inside St John's Church. The WW1 Roll is the large framed item - the much smaller WW2 Roll can be seen just to its left)

The details for WW1 are as follows. Names have been rearranged into alphabetical order.

The Manchester Employers' Rolls of Honour

"The Manchester City Battalions Book of Honour" was published in 1916. As well as details about the Manchester soldiers, it contained Rolls of Honour for many Manchester Employers, including the firms belonging to the Fine Cotton Spinners and Doublers Association Ltd. Among these were George Swindells & Son Ltd (owners of the Clarence and Adelphi Mills), Thomas Oliver & Sons (Bollington) Ltd (owners of the Waterhouse Mill). Henry & Leigh Slater Ltd (owners of the paper staining works) also provided a Roll of Honour. Some of these had employees in locations other than Bollington (particularly Slater's), so not all of the names are necessarily connected to Bollington.

For each firm, there were Rolls of Honour "...Wherein are recorded the names of those who at the first call voluntarily placed their services at the disposal of their King and Country for the defence of Liberty and Civilisation" and an Appendix of "...Names of Men who have attested under the Group System". (See the section on Terminology for an explanation of the Group System).

So in each case, the first list included "patriotic volunteers" who had joined up before there had been any suggestion of conscription being needed. But there were of course those who enlisted later who were equally patriotic, but had been too young to have joined up before, or for whom health or other circumstance had delayed voluntary enlistment.
To fully understand the reason for this distinction, it should be noted that the foreword to this book was written by the Earl of Derby, who had been one of the most successful campaigners for Kitchener's Army in 1914, and later introduced the "Derby Scheme", which was a relatively unsuccessful attempt to boost recruitment in October 1915. Compusory conscription was introduced in 1916.
